Couloir

One of a series of paintings inspired by old LIFE and National Geographic magazines. The source image for this was actually cobbled together in photoshop from 2 or 3 images of a famous, early 60's American Mt. Everest expedition.

Besides the illusion of gravity and of deep space rushing down the couloir and back (and seemingly tilting up) to the distant glacier, I was intrigued by the state-of-the-art high tech equipment of the day: leather, wool, and nylon. The climbers probably smoked, too, in their tents and warming huts.

oil on canvas, 36 x 48 inches
